A clinical psychologist in Malaysia is a psychologist who specializes in psychological disorders. In Malaysia, there is no state-wide association representing clinical psychologists. Nevertheless, there are professional associations. One of these associations is the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology (MSCP). The members of these associations are trained in a wide range of psychological conditions.
There is no representative body for clinical psychologists in Malaysia
The concept of setting up a representative body for clinical psychologists in Malaysia dates back to the early 2000s. A small group of clinicians sought to register and give themselves a voice. However, the lack of support and funding prevented this from happening. As a result, the establishment of a professional body was delayed. The issues that led to the need for a professional body included professional registration, representation, regulation, and indemnity. A few clinicians started holding meetings at HELP University College.
Despite the lack of representation in Malaysia, clinical psychologists play an important role in the treatment of psychological disorders. A clinical psychologist investigates psychological disorders, screens clients, and gives advice on treatment. They can also provide expert opinions on the best method of treatment for clients, whether they’re self-referred or referred by other clinicians. In addition to practicing clinical psychology, they are trained to serve in all departments of a teaching hospital.
Although Malaysia has only 204 psychiatrists working in government institutions, the number of psychologists should be 3,000 or more, evenly distributed across the country. According to the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) from 2015, nearly seven million people in Malaysia are affected by psychological distress. Only 200 clinical psychologists practice in the country, which is less than half of the number of clinical psychologists in the UK.
As a result of this, psychologists in Malaysia are trying to set up a professional registration board. PSIMA’s main objectives are to promote ethical practice and maintain standards of professional psychology. The organization also works with the government in Malaysia to institute registration for professional psychologists.
Psychiatrists provide the highest number of referrals
The highest number of referrals for clinical psychologists come from psychiatrists, with 82.2% of these referring to children and adolescents. Adult patients also accounted for the highest percentage of referrals. The most common presenting disorders among referrals were depressive disorders and anxiety disorders. Psychiatrists are closely related to clinical psychology and often work with clinical psychologists in collaborative settings.
Psychiatrists provide the most referrals for clinical psychologists in Malaysia. This is because these patients are more likely to have neurodevelopmental disorders or anxiety problems. These disorders are common among children and adolescents, and in adults, many people are suffering from anxiety disorders or depressive disorders. Psychiatrists also provide the highest volume of referrals for clinical psychologists, though they are not the only ones referring patients.
Psychiatrists refer patients to clinical psychologists based on their assessment of the patient’s condition. These psychologists may provide psychotherapy or counseling services to patients, or they may refer patients to psychiatrists for the same purposes. In addition to this, patients can seek clinical psychologists directly from psychiatrists. Depending on the need and location of the psychologist, referrals may take weeks or even months. In addition, the Ministry of Health recently set up a new initiative called MENTARI, which provides psychological care through licensed psychologists in Malaysia.
In terms of numbers, Malaysia has four59 psychiatrists. Approximately half of these are employed in government facilities, while two-thirds work in private facilities. There are also 9,580 certified counselors registered with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors. A number of these individuals are employed in healthcare facilities, while 346 work at psychiatric clinics. However, the Health Ministry is taking preliminary steps to meet the mental health needs of the nation by hiring 200 counselors on a one-year contract.
Clinical psychologists provide treatment for psychological disorders in almost every level of sub-specialty of medicine
Clinical psychologists play an important role in the mental health care system in Malaysia, working in collaboration with psychiatrists to diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), there are 4.2 million adults in Malaysia who are living with mental health problems. These numbers have increased since 1996 when they accounted for 10.7% of the adult population.
Clinical psychologists diagnose and treat psychological disorders using the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) published by the American Psychological Association (APA). Because everyone responds differently to treatment, clinical psychologists must tailor their plans to the needs of their patients. For example, two people suffering from the same mental health issue may respond differently to the same treatment method. They also conduct research to evaluate the effectiveness of their treatments by devising valid tests.
A clinical psychologist treats a variety of disorders, from minor adjustment problems to more serious mental illnesses. They may work with individuals, couples, families, organizations, or even non-profit agencies. A clinical psychologist can specialize in a particular area of psychology, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy.
A psychologist’s role is to help people cope with their life’s stresses. Their goal is to develop and implement effective strategies that will help people resolve problems and cope with their lives. Their extensive training and expertise in the field of psychology help them find the best treatment plan for their patients.
